These five are for the supermini connoisseur, who likes their cars compact, but cool. Is that you? These superminis can be pricey, but you are so worth it!
1) Volkswagen Polo BlueGT 1.4TSI
List Price: €22,490 (3 dr)
This is the hottest Polo on sale in Ireland at the moment, with a very exciting 150bhp under the bonnet. The Polo is one of the classiest superminis around but the Polo BlueGT is about sportiness and fuel efficiency – the 1.4 litre TSI turbocharged petrol engine uses active cylinder management to increase mpg, by shutting down the second and third cylinders during low and medium load driving conditions. Under the skin, there is a sports suspension that sits 15mm lower than the standard Polo. 17” alloy wheels, a body kit and spoiler add to the look of dynamism. And for an extra €620, you can have your Polo BlueGT with 5 doors.
2) DS 3 DStyle PureTech 110 S&S
List Price: €22,045 (3 dr)
DS is the luxury arm of the Citroen brand, and the DS 3 is undoubtedly the fledgling brand’s most successful offering to date. The DS 3 makes a serious style statement, with extensive customisation options across body and roof colours, wheels and trim. Though based on the Citroen C3 supermini, the DS 3 is light years away in terms of driver engagement. The DS 3’s agile handling and precise steering needs a peppy petrol mate. You’ll find that in the 1.2 litre PureTech three cylinder turbocharged petrol unit recently added to the range. Superminis don’t get fizzier than this!
3) Ford Fiesta Zetec-S Black Edition 1.0L EcoBoost
List Price: €21,700 (3 dr)
If a standard Fiesta is not exclusive enough (it is Ireland’s best-selling supermini after all), you can be sure that you will stand out from the crowd in the new Fiesta Zetec-S Black Edition. Finished in Panther Black, with a red roof, red exterior detailing, body kit and a set of 16” black alloy wheels, the Black Edition looks mean. The Fiesta’s fine handling is enhanced by a sports suspension, with tuned steering and revised gearing. The icing on the cake is Ford’s sparky 125PS 1.0 litre EcoBoost petrol engine under the bonnet. Ford also offers the Zetec-S Red Edition here, finished in Race Red with black contrasting detail.

4) Opel Corsa Limited Edition 1.0L Turbo
List Price: €19,395 (3 dr)
The 3 door Limited Edition is the sporty one of the new Opel Corsa range. It’s got the looks, the sports-tuned suspension and the engine. The Corsa wears the three door coupé style profile particularly well and there are a range of bright, look-at-me colour options (and some more sultry ones) available for the Limited Edition trim. Exterior upgrades include 17” black alloy wheels, black door mirrors and a black roof, and they ensure that the Corsa Limited Edition looks the business. For lively performance, with a sporty engine note to go with it, spec your Corsa Limited Edition with Opel’s new 1.0 litre (115PS) turbo petrol.
5) Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo
List Price: €18,945 (5 dr)
The Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo is an eye-catching addition to the new Fabia range, with a dramatic red and black colour scheme that sets it apart. If you must have a five door supermini (but want it to look sporty too) then the Fabia Monte Carlo will provide, as it has five doors as standard. There is a choice of three petrols or two diesels for this trim level, but I’ve chosen the 1.2 litre TSI with 90bhp. The same engine is available with 110bhp, but this one has enough performance for most and looks like a good value prospect if you’re more about the looks and equipment, than outright power.
