There’s never been a better time to go electric with some of the best small electric cars on sale right now offering great choice, range and value for money. Small EVs have become much more affordable in recent years with several available with a sticker price under €20,000.
Why buy an electric car
Zero tailpipe emissions from electric vehicles mean cleaner air for us all, particularly in towns and cities. Small EVs are cheaper to run over the long term when you charge at home, with lower energy and maintenance costs.
The Irish Government also offers a number of incentives, including an EV Scrappage Scheme that makes them more attractive than ever for buyers with a car of 13 years or older.
The public charging network is growing but it’s advisable to have an electric vehicle charge point installed at home if possible for more convenience and it will be much cheaper to run the car overall.

Listed below are some of the best electric city cars and superminis on the market in Ireland in 2026. Please note I have included the WLTP range, which is an industry standard for the measurement of range driving on battery power. The WLTP measurement is good for comparing vehicles but expect the range to be less in real world driving due to factors such as your speed, driving style and weather conditions.

1. Hyundai Inster
The Hyundai Inster has been a runaway success in Ireland since it launched and it’s easy to see why. It’s a brilliant all-rounder offering a clever, practical cabin as well as excellent build quality and in-car technology that feels anything but basic. There are two different battery options: the 42kWh with up to 327 kilometres (from €19,595) and the 49kWh with up to 360 kilometres (from €23,095). It’s ideal for town or city use, but doesn’t fall apart on bigger roads like motorways either and has the range and fast charging for trips out of town. It’s a strict four-seater but the seats can do clever things like slide forward to create more boot space. An easy car to recommend.

The Renault 5 has caught the attention of many with its charming, retro-inspired design and chic interior. It’s ideal if you’re looking for a stylish small electric car that’s packed with clever technology and fun to drive. It features brilliant in-built Google in the infotainment system for seamless journey planning. The Renault 5 40kWh (from €26,295) offers a range up to 300 kilometres, while the 52kWh (from €29,295) offers up to 410 kilometres, ideal for longer trips. It might not be the cheapest small electric car but it’s highly desirable all the same if you can live with the cramped rear seat and small boot.

The Dolphin Surf is Chinese car giant BYD’s smallest car to launch to date and possibly it’s most fun! The city car is a strict four-seater and comes with outlandish styling that is best shown off in vibrant green. It’s well-appointed inside and goes seamlessly from town to motorway if required for longer trips. It offers good value starting from €17,985 for a 30kWh battery with range up to just 220 kilometres. Of more interest to Irish buyers is the 43.2kWh battery (from €22,230) with up to 322 kilometres.
The BYD Dolphin Surf offers good value to Irish buyers looking for a small electric car4. Nissan Micra
The Micra is the sister car to the new Renault 5, sharing the same underpinnings, batteries and much of the excellent in-car tech. It also has a different character with unique styling that pays homage to past Micras but with a slick, modern twist. It’s fun to drive and offers a level of sophistication that makes it comfortable and refined, even for long journeys. It’s not huge inside but makes up for it in character. It’s available in a range of eye-catching colours to help it stand out. The 40kWh battery offers up to 317 kilometres of range (from €25,995). The 52kWh can manage up to 416 kilometres (from €30,995).
The 2026 Nissan Micra is good to drive and features great in-car technology5. Fiat Grande Panda
The famous Fiat Panda returns and this time it’s available as a pure battery electric vehicle, as well as a hybrid. It’s a fun and practical small car with chunky SUV styling and plenty of bright colours available. At the moment it offers a city-friendly electric range of up to 320 kilometres from a 44kWh battery. A longer range battery will join before the end of the year with 400 kilometre range. It starts from a thrifty €22,995.
The new Fiat Grande Panda is a fun and practical small EV6. Alfa Romeo Junior
If you’re looking for something a little more premium, the Alfa Romeo Junior Elettrica is a great option, priced from €34,995. It’s a gorgeous car with classic striking Alfa design and a well-appointed interior that feels fancier than most. There’s not a huge amount of rear legroom but it does have a good sized boot. It uses a 54kWh battery and offers up to 406 kilometres of range.
The Alfa Romeo Junior Elettrica is a good option if you want something more upmarket7. Kia EV2
Kia has done very well selling electric vehicles in Ireland and its latest might be the best yet for buyers seeking practicality and affordability in a small electric car. The EV2 offer chunky SUV styling and excellent technology onboard for such a small car. One of the Kia EV2’s biggest strengths is the choice of two different battery sizes. The 42kWh standard range offers up to 317km, while the 61kWh long range is up to 453km, currently best in class and ideal for buyers who want to take it on long journeys. The 42kWh version is priced from €28,660, while the 61kWh is available from €31,940.

MG has a strong track record in the Irish market with a string of successful models like the original MG4. The new MG4 Urban is a practical and budget-friendly small electric hatchback that starts from an attractive €22,595 for the smaller battery. There are two battery options available including the 43kWh with a 325 kilometre range and the 54kWh with up to 416 kilometres possible (from €25,795).
