Audi Ireland has confirmed the new 2020 Audi A3 Saloon for Ireland. The arrival of the fourth generation Audi A3 sportback (hatchback) will be followed by a handsome new saloon this autumn. Pricing is expected to be announced this summer.

The Audi A3 Saloon first debuted in 2013 and has been a very popular addition to the compact A3 range. Now the small four door saloon has been refined and updated in this latest generation of the car. The A3 Saloon complements Audi's saloon range, slotting in below the Audi A4, updated in 2019, and the new generation Audi A6.

What's new for the 2020 Audi A3 Saloon?

The new A3 Saloon has the same wheelbase as the outgoing car but is now 4 centimetres longer. Width has increased by 2 centimetres, while its taller by just 1 centimetre! Along with a lowered driving seat, Audi says there is 2 centimetres more headroom in the front. They also claim some additional elbow room. At 425 litres, the luggage capacity is exactly the same as in the predecessor model.

The styling has been updated though this is still very much recognisable as an A3 Saloon. Styling updates were previewed in the 2020 Audi A3 Sportback previewed some months ago. The A3 Saloon has a similar front end with large 'Singleframe' honeycomb grille flanked by striking headlights. The separate boot and rear styling distinguish it from the hatchback. In fact the Saloon is 15 centimetres longer than the A3 Sportback.

Engine options for the new A3

Audi tell us that aerodynamics have been improved by a higher rear end compared with the predecessor, as well as a large diffuser. At launch, there will be a choice of two TFSI petrol engines and one TDI diesel engine. The 35 TFSI is a 1.5-litre direct injection engine with 150 PS. It's available with a newly developed six-speed manual transmission and with a quick-shifting seven-speed S tronic.

Besides the cylinder on demand technology, the powertrain in conjunction with the S tronic dual-clutch transmission uses a 48-volt mild hybrid system. It recovers energy during deceleration, supports the engine with up to 50 Nm of torque when driving off and accelerating from low engine speeds. It also allows the A3 Saloon to coast with the engine switched off in many situations. In everyday driving, Audi says it reduces consumption by up to 0.4 litres per 100 kilometres.

A 1.0 TFSI three-cylinder engine with 110PS will follow. There's also a 2.0 TDI with 150PS badged '35 TDI' with a lower powered '30 TDI' expected also.

MMI Navigation plus will be the flagship infotainment system. It uses the third-generation modular infotainment platform (MIB 3), boasting computing power ten times higher than in the previous model! It also connects the car via LTE Advanced speed, and connects the smartphones of the passengers to the Internet via Wi-Fi hotspot. The MMI Navigation plus offers a multitude of Audi connect services as standard. These include online traffic information, news, and additional information such as photos, opening times, and user reviews relating to points of interest. The new Audi A3 Saloon
The new Audi A3 Saloon

Audi pioneered the concept of a premium hatchback with the launch of the Audi A3 hatchback in 1996 and they’ve been refining the A3 ever since to make it a premium compact bestseller. In 2013, Audi added a very handsome new A3 Saloon to the range.

The Audi A3 Saloon S Line on review!

Now on its third generation, the 2016 Audi A3 Saloon has had some mild styling tweaks and the addition of new driver assistance systems and engines. Available as a saloon as tested, a 3 door or 5 door Sportback, all models now have a broader single frame grille and new lights front and back. The A3’s classy silhouette is retained and S Line models look particularly good with sportier bumpers and 18” alloys.

The interior design of the Audi A3 is beautifully simple and minimalist. The materials used throughout are top quality and the ‘virtual cockpit’ that replaces traditional instrument dials is now available for the first time in the A3. It’s a €2,450 option but comes as part of a tech pack that includes Audi Connect with SIM card, phone box with wireless charging and MMI Nav Plus. It adds the wow factor and it is very simple and intuitive to use.

Is the A3 Saloon a family car?

The interior space in the A3 saloon is competitive for a compact saloon of this type, though rear headroom is more accommodating in the hatchback. The boot is 425 litres, which is actually larger than that of the hatchback. But the space is more difficult to access because of the narrow opening.

The A3 range kicks off with the 3 door priced at €27,810, the five door at €28,810 and the saloon at €29,810. Standard equipment includes 16” alloys, four electric windows, air con, and a folding infotainment screen with Bluetooth connectivity and a rotary controller. SE trim adds 17” alloys, Apple Car Play and Android Auto, cruise control and rear parking sensors. S Line trim includes sportier bumpers, LED lights front and rear, 18” alloys, Audi Drive Select, and a flat bottomed steering wheel.

Is the A3 Saloon any good?

The Audi A3 Saloon is front wheel drive. There are petrol and diesel engines. Power outputs range from 110 to 184hp and Audi has just added a new three cylinder 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine to the A3 range. The best for economy is the 1.6TDI that’s capable of returning up to 74mpg. On the road, the refinement of this engine is impressive and the 110hp is plenty to confidently cruise and overtake. The A3 Saloon is a smooth and agile drive, with virtually no body roll in the corners. It’s quiet in the cabin with road, wind and engine noise well-suppressed. You can deselect the sports suspension on S Line models, which is probably advisable because the normal suspension has a firm enough edge to it.

The A3 saloon is Audi’s first compact saloon but it’s a great addition to the A3 range. If an Audi A4 is out of reach price wise, the A3 saloon is definitely worth a look. The car is not cheap to buy and can get very expensive very quickly, but the quality and refinement is top notch – it’s a class act.
