The Volkswagen Snapshot Instagram Competition, powered by The Snapys, is back for its second year. The Instagram-based competition invites users of the app to upload photos to Instagram using the #VWSnapshot hashtag, along with their chosen category hashtags.

The categories for this year’s competition are 'Design', 'Light', 'Roadtrip', 'Technology' and 'Volkswagen.'

Prizes for the winning entrants include a trip to Barcelona, an escape to Bubblehouse, Finn Lough, drones and premium photography lighting equipment.

Twelve winning entrants will also feature in the 2019 Volkswagen Snapshot calendar, proceeds of which will be donated to Volkswagen Ireland’s 2018 charity partner, Focus Ireland.

Mark McGrath, Head of Marketing at Volkswagen Ireland commented: "We are delighted to launch the Volkswagen Snapshot 2018 competition, which follows a hugely successful first year which gained over 5,000 entrants. We at Volkswagen Ireland are pleased to support this very worthy cause."

Sinead Price, Co-Director of Fundraising and Marketing for Focus Ireland commented: “Last year was the worst year for homelessness in the history of the state. More men, women and children experienced homelessness than ever before in our history. There are 9,652 men, women and children homeless across Ireland, up from 3,258 in July 2014, that is a rise of 548 people since January 2018 alone.

“The support of Volkswagen Ireland will mean Focus Ireland can prevent more families from falling into homelessness in the first place, and help to ensure that others already impacted can with the backing of Volkswagen Ireland, exit homelessness.”

Conor Lynch, CEO, Connector, commented: "The team at Connector is delighted to continue our successful partnership with Volkswagen to run Volkswagen Snapshot in 2018. Our goal with the competition is to identify, showcase and reward Ireland's most talented Instagrammers. Thanks to the generous support from Volkswagen for making this possible.”

Sales of the 2018 Snapshot calendar raised €3,000 for Pieta House.

Volkswagen Launch ‘Snapshot’ Calendar In Aid Of Pieta House

Over the summer, Volkswagen Ireland wanted to engage with Ireland's Volkswagen community in a contemporary way. With this in mind, a competition was developed in collaboration with the Snapys entitled ‘Volkswagen Snapshot’, an Instagram-based photo competition designed to be an exercise of self-expression and participation with the brand.

Volkswagen received 5,000 entries over two months and they selected their twelve favourites to be curated into the 2018 Volkswagen Snapshot Calendar.

Each calendar will cost €10 and all proceeds go to Pieta House.

The calendars, featuring a variety of images taken by contestants, include a wedding in a vintage VW camper to scenes from the streets of Dublin.

Mark McGrath, Head of Marketing Volkswagen Ireland, said: “The 2018 Volkswagen Snapshot, for us, represents the long-standing and continued connection between Ireland and the Volkswagen brand. It was a tough selection process but these 12 images showcase the amazing talent we have in this country. We’re absolutely thrilled to be partnering with Pieta House and are looking forward to raising as much as we can for such a good cause.”

Interview With Ben Dollery, BD Supercars

Ben Dollery is a UK supercar photographer with over 8000 followers on his Instagram feed, BD Supercars. Ben posts consistently high quality car photos on Instagram and he is great at engaging with other car enthusiasts, bloggers, vloggers and photographers. Living near the famous Goodwood circuit means that Ben has amazing access to some incredible cars, so if you love supercars, check him out on @bdsupercars!

1. Where did your passion for supercars begin?

My passion for supercars began at an early age. Watching Formula 1 with Michael Schumacher, who was my hero growing up, driving for Ferrari – that love of Ferraris really started the whole supercar passion for me.

2. How did you first get into car photography?

I started out in car photography in July 2015, but that was just a couple of photos here and there with my iPhone. I didn't really get started properly until January 2016 and that’s where BD Supercars began.

3. Has it been easy to get access to the cars?

It has for me because I live 10 minutes away from the famous Goodwood Motor Circuit in West Sussex, UK. The majority of their track days and events are free except the Festival of Speed/Goodwood Revival and Members Meetings. But other than that, it's pretty easy there. At other events I go to I don't have a problem in seeing what I want to see, so I'm quite happy by the end of the day.

4. What sort of equipment do you use?

I use a DSLR camera. It’s a Nikon D3300 with Tamron 18-200mm lens with polariser.

5. How important is social media to what you do? Which work best for you in promoting your work?

I only use one social media platform and that's Instagram. I find Instagram really easy to share photos with other car enthusiasts compared to the likes of Flickr.

6. What motivates you to do what you do?

Seeing how other photographers grow and also seeing my photos getting better. I want to be like those photographers with a very big following, and have people recognise me at car events without having to wear a sponsor t-shirt with my logo on it.

7. Do you have any role models working in this area?

The big photographers like Alex Penfold.

8. What’s been the biggest challenge?

Probably choosing the right photos and editing them right so they are suitable for posting. Also posting photos at the right time of day to get the most coverage.

9. Have you any tips or advice for anyone starting out in car photography?

Planning ahead is key. Find out what events are about and what you can attend. Make sure you take lots of photos and research other car photographers to find out how they take photos e.g. angles, edits, scenery. Build relationships up with others and comment on other people’s photos.

10. What would be in your dream three car garage?

Ferrari F12, Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG (daily) and Lamborghini Huracan.

11. How can readers follow your work?

Follow me on Instagram: @bdsupercars and #bdsupercars

Thanks to Ben for taking part in this interview.
