Tesla Model 3 Performance Review (2026)

The Tesla Model 3 remains one of Ireland’s most popular electric cars, finishing last year as the second-bestselling EV in the country.

For 2026, Tesla has updated the Model 3 range once again with improved battery technology, longer driving range and subtle refinements across the line-up including the return of the indicator stalk that was removed in the 2024 facelift. Now it appears back by popular demand…and the car is all the better for it.

In this review, I’m driving the Tesla Model 3 Performance, the pinnacle of the range known for its supercar-rivalling acceleration. There is a market for performance electric cars like this, albeit a small one. Rivals include the likes of the BMW i4, the Hyundai Ioniq 5N and the Polestar 2 Performance Plus.

But is the Tesla Model 3 Performance the one to have or just too expensive? Let’s take a closer look.

2026 Tesla Model 3 Design

The Model 3 received a mid-life facelift in 2024, which kept the 3’s famous sleek, aerodynamic shape, but modernised it with new LED lights front and rear. It still looks fresh and modern and the Performance upgrades subtly elevate it among more standard versions of the Model 3.

The car sits low to the ground anyway but the black front splitter gives it an even sportier stance. The biggest giveaway is at the back with a glorious carbon fibre spoiler and rear diffuser fitted. Finished in Ultra Red, this car is a real headturner.

The standard alloy is 18-inch, but the Performance gets a unique set of 20-inch ‘Warp’ alloy wheels wrapped in Pirelli PZero tyres. The alloy has a dark grey finish and sporty red brake calipers peek through. It’s a stunning car altogether and certainly has its own kerb appeal without shouting too loud about the stealthy performance underneath.

2026 Tesla Model 3 Interior

Tesla invented the whole concept of a minimalist interior many years ago now and the company hasn’t deviated from that philosophy since. Most of the Model 3’s features are controlled through the large central touchscreen, so you’ve got to be comfortable with that. There’s not even a head-up display: your speed is displayed on the central screen.

It gives the interior a very clean appearance and the screen itself works very well. The menus are laid out logically and there’s a huge amount of functionality and features included. However famously Tesla does not include Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. But the in-built navigation is excellent and there is also a Spotify app you can log in with your own details.

Controversially, Tesla replaced the indicator stalk for buttons on the steering wheel in 2024 update. It wasn’t particularly well-received, so now the indicator stalk is back and it makes a big difference! It’s much more intuitive to use of course, though forward and reverse is still managed through a swipe on the screen.

The fit and finish is good with ambient lighting elevating the vibe inside. However in my opinion the Model 3 Performance doesn’t really add much sportiness to the cabin aside from new sports seats with the Performance logo and better bolstering. Seats are heated and ventilated with power adjustment for the ultimate luxury.

There’s also a new front camera for the 2026 Tesla Model 3, located in the front fascia. It provides a better view of the surroundings on the centre screen and comes with its own fluid washer and heating to prevent fogging and stay clean in all weather conditions.

2026 Tesla Model 3 Practicality

The Model 3 offers a good amount of legroom in the back thanks to a completely flat floor. However family buyers will find the Model Y Performance more spacious overall. There are Isofix points however and rear seat passengers also get their own screen to control things like climate settings, as well as play games and watch videos.

The saloon-style boot offers plenty of space but the design can make it more awkward to access than in the Model Y for instance, which opens more like a hatchback. There is handy underfloor storage and of course a generous storage compartment under the bonnet.

2026 Tesla Model 3 Versions

All versions of the 2026 Tesla Model 3 now have longer ranges than before thanks to upgraded battery packs with higher-density cells to deliver more energy. 

• Model 3 Standard, Rear Wheel Drive offers 554km, up from 513km.
• Model 3 Long Range, Rear Wheel Drive offers 750 km WLTP, up from 702km.
• Model 3 Long Range, All Wheel Drive offers 716 km, up from 678km.
• Model 3 Performance like the one tested in this review now offers 580 km WLTP, up from 528km.

Driving the Tesla Model 3 Performance

On the road the Tesla Model 3 Performance feels like a sports car thanks to the combination of the low driving position, its performance and natural responsiveness. The grip from the all wheel drive layout is sensational and the Performance corners with real skill, putting its power down perfectly when accelerating out of bends.

The Performance gets bespoke chassis hardware to improve the stiffness and performance, including adaptive dampers with hollow damper piston rods, multi-sectioned stabiliser bar, ultra-high strength steel springs and stiffer suspension top mounts. This translates to brilliant body control, and the poise of a sports car. A BMW i4 is a bit more engaging to drive, but the Model 3’s combination of power and grip is intoxicating in its own distinct way.

There’s more power and torque than before, and a few different modes for the acceleration: Chill, Standard and Insane. The Performance will sprint to 100kmh in just 3.1 seconds. Tesla also improved efficiency for this model by 2% as part of the 2024 update. My average consumption was an excellent 17.8 kWh per 100 kilometres considering the power and performance on tap.

You can also adjust the ride and handling characteristics between Standard and Sport through the screen. It’s generally comfortable to travel in, though the firmness becomes more apparent out of town on bumpy country roads. But ultimately it’s a very easy car to live with.

Charging

Fast charging is possible up to 250kW and there’s 11kW AC charging.

2026 Tesla Model 3 Performance Price

The Standard, Rear Wheel Drive starts from €38,990, the Premium Long Range, Rear Wheel Drive from €44,990, the Premium Long Range, All Wheel Drive from €49,990 and the Performance from €59,990.

Verdict

The Model 3 Performance is the pinnacle of the range and it shows with not just the blistering power and performance at your disposal, but also numerous technical upgrades. While the pricing is steep, even over the already potent Long Range All Wheel Drive, it is well priced next to rivals like the i4. Performance electric cars are still very much a niche, but the Tesla Model 3 Performance is certainly one with desirability and longevity thanks to its excellent range and charging ability. It looks the business too.
