Volkswagen has taken the covers off the new Volkswagen Golf Mark 8. The new hatchback will arrive in Ireland in March 2020.

Generation 8 of one of the world’s favourite hatchbacks moves the game on in terms of technology and connectivity. The new Golf is the first Volkswagen to feature Car2X ‘swarm intelligence’ technology and most of the displays and controls in the cabin are now digital.

Styling has evolved once again with LED light technology now standard across the range.

In Ireland the 2020 Volkswagen Golf will be available in four trim lines: Golf, Life, Style and R-Line.

According to Volkswagen Ireland, even entry level cars will have keyless start, digital cockpit, We Connect, We Connect Plus mobile online services and functions, automatic air con, lane assist, turn-off assist and front assist motoring.

Car2X will be available as standard and means that the driver can see signals from the traffic infrastructure and information from other vehicles up to 800 metres away through a display. The Golf also shares these warnings with other Car2X models.

Eight versions of the Volkswagen Golf Mark 8 will be available including the 1.0 TSI 110hp Evo (petrol) and the 2.0 TDI 115hp (diesel).

Hybrid technology will be a strong feature with 48V technology now available in the Golf. Mild hybrids badged ‘eTSI’ use the latest generation of efficient TSI engines with a belt starter generator and 48V lithium-ion battery.  Volkswagen says consumption has been cut by up to 10% (on the basis of WLTP) and the vehicle’s character when moving off is agile and comfortable. Volkswagen will offer the Golf in three eTSI variants with 110 PS, 130 PS and 150 PS.

There will also be two plug-in hybrids in the new Golf range: a more efficiency focused output with 204 PS and a more performance-biased ‘GTE’ with 245 PS. A new 13 kWh lithium-ion battery means that the electric range will now be up to 60 kilometres for these models.

Herbert Diess, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG:

“Over the course of seven generations, the Golf has impressed more than 35 million customers. The entire automobile industry expects a new Golf to set the standard. In terms of its technology, the Golf is making the greatest leap forward since its debut.”

Ralf Brandstätter, Chief Operating Officer of Volkswagen Passenger Cars:

“This car is completely new. But of course, a Golf always remains a Golf. Because the underlying concept is timeless. This car has defined our brand over decades. The Golf has consistently made new technologies available for everyone.”
