Continental Brings Vision Zero Live Event To Mondello
Continental Tyres recently brought its Vision Zero Live event to Mondello Race Circuit in Co. Kildare. Over three days, general consumers, staff from tyre retailers and managers of large company fleets had the opportunity to participate in a range of ‘hands on the wheel’ demonstrations of the company’s latest tyre and automotive technologies.
The company wants to achieve zero injuries, zero fatalities and zero accidents on our roads – hence, Continental’s Vision Zero initiative.
Using a fleet of some 20 vehicles to run a series of eye-opening demonstrations, participants at the Vision Zero Live event were shown how dangerous it is to drive on tyres that are at or near the legal tread depth level of 1.6mm. In addition, there was the opportunity to get behind the wheel and perform emergency braking manoeuvres in cars fitted with premium and budget tyres and to observe the difference in performance and stopping distances.
Some of the Continental automotive technologies that were on display included Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) where the car will stop automatically if the driver does not intervene to avoid a collision. AEB is becoming ever more popular on all types of cars and is no longer the preserve of the more premium brands.

One of the most popular activities from Vision Zero Live was the opportunity to get behind the wheel of a Mercedes-Benz E-Class with all of the windows blacked out and just the option of using the car’s camera and sensor systems to navigate a pre-prepared course.
Speaking about Vision Zero Live, Tom Dennigan, Head of Continental Tyres Ireland, said: “This event is all about educating the public about the wider expertise of the Continental Group and showing our long-standing commitment to safety. Many people know us for our premium tyres but we also wanted to show people that we have long been experts at developing automotive safety systems that are embedded in many of the cars that we see on the highways and byways of Ireland. It was also a great opportunity to show participants in a practical way the importance of proper tyre care, with many consumers commenting on how scary it was to see the danger of driving on tyres with excessively worn tread.”
2018 Audi A7 Sportback Revealed
Audi has revealed the all-new Audi A7 Sportback, expected to arrive in Ireland in 2018. The new Audi A7 Sportback "offers the design of a Coupé, the spaciousness of a saloon and the flexibility of an Avant" according to its makers.
The four door coupé has a new interior design with horizontal lines and a sleek instrument panel. A 10.1-inch upper display is tilted toward the driver and almost disappears into the dashboard when switched off. The display’s user interface appears as soon as the car is opened.
The 8.6-inch lower display provides access to the climate control system, comfort functions and text input. MMI navigation plus also includes the Audi virtual cockpit with a 12.3-inch display.
There will be a choice of four and six cylinder engines in both petrol and diesel. The 3.0TDI 231HP is expected to be the most popular variant. All engines used in the Audi A7 Sportback will come as standard with a new mild hybrid system (MHEV) for greater comfort and efficiency.

The start-stop function has been significantly expanded and now activates at 22 km/h. In combination with the standard front camera, the engine can be restarted while at a standstill as soon as the vehicle ahead begins to move. The MHEV technology reduces fuel consumption by up to 0.7 litres per 100 kilometres.
Like the all-new Audi A8, the Audi A7 has also been developed for highly automated driving. From 2018, Audi will gradually be taking piloted driving functions, such as parking pilot, garage pilot and traffic jam pilot into production.
The all-new Audi A7 Sportback will launch on the Irish market in late February 2018.

Volkswagen Launch ‘Snapshot’ Calendar In Aid Of Pieta House
Over the summer, Volkswagen Ireland wanted to engage with Ireland's Volkswagen community in a contemporary way. With this in mind, a competition was developed in collaboration with the Snapys entitled ‘Volkswagen Snapshot’, an Instagram-based photo competition designed to be an exercise of self-expression and participation with the brand.
Volkswagen received 5,000 entries over two months and they selected their twelve favourites to be curated into the 2018 Volkswagen Snapshot Calendar.
Each calendar will cost €10 and all proceeds go to Pieta House.
The calendars, featuring a variety of images taken by contestants, include a wedding in a vintage VW camper to scenes from the streets of Dublin.
Mark McGrath, Head of Marketing Volkswagen Ireland, said: “The 2018 Volkswagen Snapshot, for us, represents the long-standing and continued connection between Ireland and the Volkswagen brand. It was a tough selection process but these 12 images showcase the amazing talent we have in this country. We’re absolutely thrilled to be partnering with Pieta House and are looking forward to raising as much as we can for such a good cause.”
